Types of Stirrups Used in Reinforcement

October 11, 2024 /Posted byIyman Faisal / 1

Stirrups

Stirrups is an steel reinforcement bars (rebar) shaped into closed loops, typically used in reinforced concrete footing, Column, beam & slabs. They are positioned perpendicular to the longitudinal reinforcement bars and are tied to them to create a cage-like structure.

Stirrups provide lateral support for longitudinal reinforcement to prevent the buckling & improving the shear resistance of the concrete.

stirrups are designed to resist shear forces and to hold the main reinforcement bars also providing stability & Prevent the crack from heavy loads Shape of stirrups designed based on the structure

Based on shape its classified in following types

  1. Square Stirrups
  2. Rectangular Stirrups
  3. Triangular Stirrups
  4. Diamond Stirrups
  5. Circular Stirrups
  6. Spiral (or) Helical Stirrups

Based on the number of vertical bars or legs classified in following types

  1. Single legged Stirrups
  2. Two legged Stirrups
  3. Four legged Stirrups
  4. Six legged Stirrups

Square Stirrups

Square stirrups are commonly used in structural elements with square cross-sections in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

These stirrups is help to maintain the shape and position of the concrete reinforcement, also ensuring stability under load.

Square stirrups are simple design, effective shear resistance, commonly used in square columns and beams.

Minimum Number of Bars: 4 longitudinal bars

Rectangular Stirrups

Rectangular stirrups is a most common type in construction

Theses types are designed to resist shear forces and to hold the main reinforcement bars also providing stability & Prevent the crack from heavy loads.

Rectangular stirrups are commonly used in structural elements with Rectangular cross-sections in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

Minimum Number of Bars: 4 longitudinal bars

Triangular Stirrups

Triangular stirrups are less commonly used to compare square or rectangular types of stirrups.

But these kind of stirrups are highly effective specific structural situations.

these stirrups are typically used in triangular or trapezoidal beams and load-bearing members

Triangular stirrups has good shear resistance and are especially useful in structures with unconventional shapes or design constraints.

Minimum Number of Bars: 3 longitudinal bars

Diamond Stirrups

Diamond-shaped stirrups, are used in construction where the column & beam required non standard cross section.

Due to this shape its called as diamond shape stirrups, these diagonal shapes provides shear resistance and lateral support to the structure.

This type stirrups also used in less commonly to compare other types.

Minimum Number of Bars: 4 longitudinal bars

Circular Stirrups

Circular stirrups are used in the construction of round columns, piers, and piles.

These circular shape distribute the load equally around the circular cross-section to prevent the crack under the high high compressive forces or loads.

Circular stirrups are commonly used in industrial structures, bridges, and high-rise buildings where circular columns are designed.

Minimum Number of Bars: 6 longitudinal bars

Spiral (or) Helical Stirrups

Spiral (or) helical stirrups are designed commonly cylindrical columns or piers where designed.

These stirrups are a continuous steel reinforcement that surrounds the vertical bars in a spiral Arrangement its provides additional support to the structure.

These stirrups used to improve the load bearing capacity & ductility of the structure, particularly under seismic loads or in high-rise buildings.

Single-Legged Stirrups

These Single legged stirrups have an one vertical leg, its not commonly used in concrete structure, They provide minimal reinforcement and are mainly for light structures.

Two-Legged Stirrups

These double legged stirrups have an two vertical leg in both side, these stirrups mostly used in where medium shear reinforcement is required.

Four-Legged Stirrups

These four legged stirrups have an four vertical leg, these stirrups is an most common type of stirrups, its designed for where we need more lateral strength.

Six-Legged Stirrups

These six legged stirrups have an six vertical leg, these type of stirrups are used in heavily loaded column & beams. such as high-rise buildings, bridges, etc..
