Ductile Iron Manhole Covers Detailed Explanation

Manhole cover

A manhole cover is a removable plate that covers an opening in the ground, which is used to connecting the underground in sewer systems, drainage networks, or other underground utilities. So, workers can remove the cover and access the underground systems when needed.

Ductile Iron Manhole Covers

Ductile iron, also known as nodular cast iron or spheroidal graphite iron, in this type of manhole covers used in Heavy & High traffic areas such as Highway roads, Airports, Parking areas.

In this Type of Manhole cover classified Two Types based on their usage

A. Classification Based on Based on Load Capacity

B. Classification Based on Shape

A. Classification Based on Load Capacity

Based on load capacity it is classified in Five types

1. Light Duty Manhole covers – A-15

2. Medium Duty Manhole covers – C250

3. Heavy Duty Manhole covers – D400

4. Extra Heavy Duty Manhole covers – E600

5. Super Heavy Duty Manhole covers – F900

1. Light Duty (A-15) manhole covers

  • In this type of manhole covers mostly used in Pedestrian areas, footpaths, car parks.
  • As per EN-Standard Its load Class is A-15
  • The Maximum load bearing capacity of this type of manhole cover is 1.5 Tons.

2. Medium Duty (B-125 & C-250) Manhole Covers

  • Medium duty manhole covers are designed for areas with medium vehicle traffic areas like a residential streets, commercial zones, and parking areas.
  • As per EN-Standard, its load class is B-125 & C-250.
  • The maximum load-bearing capacity of this type of manhole cover ranges from 12.5 tons (B-125) to 25 tons (C-250).

3. Heavy Duty (D-400) Manhole Covers

  • Heavy duty manhole covers are mostly used in areas with heavy vehicle traffic, like a highways, industrial zones, and loading areas.
  • As per EN-Standard, its load class is D-400.
  • The maximum load-bearing capacity of this type of manhole cover is 40 tons.

4. Extra Heavy Duty (E-600) Manhole Covers

  • Extra heavy duty manhole covers are used in areas with extremely heavy traffic, such as airports, docks, and industrial zones.
  • As per EN-Standard, its load class is E-600.
  • The maximum load-bearing capacity of this type of manhole cover is 60 tons.

5. Super Heavy Duty (F-900) Manhole Covers

  • Super heavy duty manhole covers are designed for the most demanding environments, including areas with the heaviest vehicle and equipment loads, like  an ports, military bases, and large industrial complexes.
  • As per EN-Standard, its load class is F-900.
  • The maximum load-bearing capacity of this type of manhole cover is 90 tons

B. Classification Based on Shape

Based on shape Manhole covers are classified 4 Types

1. Circular Manhole Covers – This type of covers used in soacakways.

2. Rectangular Manhole Covers -This type of covers commonly used in Drainage, Utility Chambers, Roadways, telecom and electrical openings.

3. Square Manhole Covers – This type of covers commonly used in Drainage, Utility Chambers & Roadways.

4. Hexagonal and Other Shapes – in this types of manhole covers used very rarely, Used in parks and pedestrian areas for unique appearances.
