What Are the Types of Beams Used in Construction? What area the 27 Types of Beams in Construction?

February 17, 2023 /Posted byIyman Faisal / 2

What Is Beam in Construction
Beams are typically horizontal members that span an opening or a distance between two points to support the weight of the structure above, Beam is structural member it’s designed for support loads by resisting bending
Beams are classified at different types, which are based on the following conditions,

1.Based on Support Conditions
2. Based on Construction Materials
3. Based on Cross-Section Shapes
4. Based on Method of Construction
5. Based on Geometry
6. Based on Equilibrium Condition

1. Beams Based on Support Condition
A structural component called a beam is made to withstand axial and bending loads, A beam’s support conditions describe how it is held up at either end or along its entire length.
A beam’s response to loading greatly depends on the kind of support circumstances it is subjected to. The most typical forms of beam support conditions are as follows:
1. Simply Supported Beam
2. Cantilever Beam
3. Fixed Beam
4. Continuous Beam
5. Overhanging beam

2. Beams Based on Construction Material
According to the type of material used in their construction, beams are “beam categorized as depending on building material
The most typical forms of beam Based on Construction Material are as follows:
1. Reinforced Concrete Beam
2. Steel Beam
3. Composite Beam
4. Timber Beam

3. Beams Based on Cross-Section Shapes
A structural component used to support loads and thwart bending is a beam, The cross-sectional shape of beams, which are commonly formed of steel, wood, concrete, or other materials, can significantly affect their strength and function.

The most typical forms of beam Based on Cross-Section Shapes are as follows:
1. Rectangular Beam
2. L – Section Beam
3. T – Section Beam
4. C – Shaped Beam
5. I- Shaped Beam
6. Circular Beam
7. Channel X Section
8. Triangular Section Beam

4. Beams Based on Method of Construction
Beams can also be categorized according to how they were made or constructed. The strength, cost, and durability of a beam can be influenced by the construction process.
The most typical forms of beam Based on Method of Construction are as follows
1. Precast Concrete Beam
2. Pre-stressed Concrete Beam
3. Cast In-situ Concrete Beam
4. Deep Beam
5. Girder Beam

5. Beams Based on Geometry
Beams can also be classified based on their geometry, or the way their cross-sectional shape is arranged. The geometry of a beam can affect its performance under different types of loads and its resistance to bending, torsion, and shear forces.

The choice of beam geometry will depend on several factors, including the load requirements, the material being used, the design constraints of the specific application, and the available manufacturing methods and resources.
The most typical forms of beam Based on Method of Construction are as follows
1. Curved Beam
2. Straight Beam
3. Tapered Beam

6. Beams Based on Equilibrium Condition
The most typical forms of beam Based on Equilibrium Condition are as follows

1.     Statically Determinate beam
2.     Statically indeterminate beam

“Statically determinate” and “statically indeterminate” are terms used to describe the equilibrium condition of a beam, They are not types of beams themselves, but rather describe the way a beam is supported and how the forces acting on it are balanced.
